PixelVision - Skin for Steam by pulseh
PixelVision - Skin for Steam

:bulletred: 2014.10.11: v2014-1011 Update for the ongoing Steam Client Beta available - [Link]

Well, it's been a while!

The last time I submitted a deviation was March 2005, if memory serves. And my last skin for Steam was even earlier than that, September 2004!

This was a while back, but it used to only take a few hours in Photoshop to work on a background, then assemble a skin within minutes... All you had to do was place an image and rearrange buttons. Good old Steam v1 [Link] ... Steam's a tad more complicated and time consuming to skin nowadays, but I reckon I did allright for being 7 years out of practice.

It did take some figuring out. The main culprit being the fact that Steam doesn't allow you to change everything right out of the skins folder, which took me several headaches to realise. Apart from that though the learning curve is quite forgiving and similar in nature to css.

The end result is something that I'm quite happy with. I set out with a clear concept in mind, but as things moved along I just kept stumbling upon ideas that improved it. The tabbed browsing was never part of the original concept for example, that came up while watching an old video about Steam's developer mode back before the 2010 UI update -- Steam v3 had tabs at the top, which I had completely forgotten about. The icons came up in a similar manner while I was building the info panels in the Library Details page, something was simply missing. After that, the idea of placing icons next to major titles or headers made its way throughout the skin.

The rest just came by ironing things out towards a Pixel Perfect style which I've always been a big fan of. It's sort of what lead to the name Pixel Vision as well.

Anyway, I wanted to keep this about the skin's creation process, but you can find more Steam-specific information and instructions on the PixelVision thread over at the SteamPowered User Forums - [Link]

Steam skinning issues

Wed Aug 1, 2012, 9:40 AM
I doubt many people are going to be reading this, but to whomever it may interest:

There's a thread over on the SteamPowered User Forums, under Suggestions/Ideas, echoing once again the age old skinning problems present in Valve's Steam 2010 UI update. You may be thinking that this doesn't affect you, but if you use PixelVision, or any other skin for Steam, this does directly affect you. And Valve have so far never commented on the issue.

If you've ever wondered why the installation of certain skins can be so painful or why you have to jump through so many awkward hoops for some things when configuring a skin (I'm particularly thinking of PixelVision's language fix here), this is why. The post that I'm about to link explains it quite thoroughly, and could give you a decent understand of why skinners do things the way they do, and even why some fancy suggestions are turned down due to the limitations of the skins folder since Steam v4 (2010 UI).

If these issues are fixed, skinning would become so much more flexible and versatile, and translate in a more seamless experience for the end user.

So if you ever feel like posting your thoughts or support in hope that Valve hears you out, here's the thread in question.

Don't suppose you ever thought of applying the same theme to a Firefox skin?

The style used for this skin is very much unique to Steam's design. I wouldn't even know how to begin merging its design with an aero titlebar. The main reason however is time, Steam updates consume more time than I have to spare as it is sadly.

Don't worry about it, I can't seem to get it to load anyway :)

About another skin, not anytime soon I'm afraid. I've really got my hands full with maintaining PixelVision as it is.

I sometimes barely have spare time for the Steam skin, and time-wise, that alone has quite a demanding to-do list. I *might* at some point, never say never, but for the foreseeable future I'm going to be sticking to Steam I'm afraid!
